BREAKING!!! Man United star prepares to leave club
The Englishman spent most of his time on the bench this season with recent reports claiming that he is on the lookout for a new club.
He has offers from former club Everton, Celtic as well as the Major League Soccer and the Chinese Super League.
"I don't see him being at United next season. I think that it would be the right thing for him to leave," Thompson told Sky Sports.
"If he stayed his role is likely to remain the same as it did this season, and while he offers a lot in terms of his experience to the likes of Marcus Rashford, that would benefit United but not Rooney.
"From what I've heard, his heart is set on going back to Everton and if they think that works for them then it makes sense.
"You've got to remember he's 31, not 36 or 37, so I think Ronald Koeman will be interested."
Asensio rejects Liverpool interest and vows to fight for place at Madrid
Despite being a target to so many clubs,Marco Asensio has come to announce his disintrest in leaving Madrid and want to stay and fight for a place in the starting line up.
Asensio came off the bench in the Champions league final against Juv and gave the last goal in a match that ended a 4-1 win in which they won the trophy.
The 21-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough season, Although Asensio only started 11 Liga games for Zinedine Zidane's side, the midfielder became an increasingly important player for the Frenchman in the second half of the season as he rotated his squad to keep star names including Cristiano Ronaldo fit for the run-in.
And the Spain international says he plans to reject any advances to remain at Madrid for the new campaign, while he is targeting more medals to add to his collection.

Real Madrid dont need to make much changes to the squad - Zidane
Real Madrid are a “perfect” squad and have no need to oversee comings or goings during the transfer window, says Ramon Calderon.
The former president at Santiago Bernabeu has been impressed by the speed in which Zinedine Zidane has been able to turn the Blancos into an all-conquering outfit.
After less than 18 months at the helm, the Frenchman has led Madrid to two Champions League successes and the La Liga title.
He has done that with a star-studded side that Calderon feels should be left untouched, despite links to the likes of David de Gea and Kylian Mbappe and with reports suggesting that James Rodriguez and Alvaro Morata could be among those moved out.
Calderon told talkSPORT: “All the lines are very balanced. I think the midfield has been perfect to assist the forwards and despite Bale’s injury, Isco played quite well.
“I don’t think we need any signings. I am sure we will because it’s always like that.
“But I think now the team is perfect. If someone comes another one, that’s already in the team, will have to leave. That’s a pity.”
Madrid celebrated their latest Champions League success in the Spanish capital on Sunday, with a 4-1 victory over Juventus having handed them a first domestic and European double since 1958.
Zidane has earned plenty of praise for the part he has played in turning fortunes around, with Calderon the latest to add his voice to the plaudits for a former playing hero turned talented coach.
He said: “A year and a half ago he was coaching the second division B team in the third tier here in Spain – he has been very humble, he wasn’t bossy, but showed his authority when needed.
“He used the substitutes well at the right moments, when he wanted the first team players to rest, which is very important in a great club.
“It is important to make every player happy, despite not all of them of course can play, and when Bale was injured he changed the 4-3-3 system to the 4-4-2 in which Cristiano Ronaldo has been very comfortable.
“In short I think he has been nearly perfect in the way he has managed this team and that’s why he’s got two Champions League titles in a row
“It’s never happened before so I think he deserves it for the way he has done everything.”

Real Madrid first club to win successive CL trophy
Real Madrid created history on Saturday as they became the first team to win back-to-back European Cups since the Champions League era began in 1992-93.
Zinedine Zidane's side proved too powerful for Juventus, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice and Casemiro adding another as they dispatched the Italian champions 4-1. Mario Mandzukic might have scored the goal of the match to draw Juve level before the break, but they were largely second best throughout at the Millennium Stadium and finished with 10 men as Juan Cuadrado was dismissed in the closing stages for clashing with Sergio Ramos. As the match moved into stoppage time, Sergio Asensio added a fourth to the Spaniards' tally.
Los Blancos were given a rougher ride last season, when they edged Atletico Madrid on penalties to claim their 11th European Cup title, and they have had to wait only a year to secure their 12th. The Bernabeu side have, therefore, added to what was already a record number of victories in the competition.
The last time any team won successive European Cups was Arrigo Sacchi's AC Milan, who won the competition in 1989 and 1990
